July clearly didn’t get the memo about slowing down. Just when it felt like the post-CBN ban chaos had settled into a new normal, Japan’s legal cannabinoid scene decided to introduce not one, but two new ingredients into the conversation. THAH and CBX arrived almost back-to-back, sending curious consumers (myself very much included) down another rabbit hole of reviews, research, and *ahem* experimentation.
Speaking of which, I spent time getting to know both of these newcomers while still reaching for a few familiar staples that continue to earn a permanent spot in my stash.

I’ll admit it—I bought this because I thought it was hilarious. Turns out, it’s also one of the most genuinely useful vape batteries I own.
It works with most standard 510 cartridges, charges via USB-C, and yes… it’s actually a functioning ballpoint pen. I’ve had a couple of business trips and meetings lately, and being able to casually toss what looks like an ordinary pen into my bag instead of a traditional vape battery has been surprisingly brilliant.
If you use 510 carts regularly, this might be the easiest impulse purchase I’ll convince you to make all year.
Smell-Proof Carry Case
Some of this month’s favourites have been… let’s call them enthusiastically aromatic. (Looking at you, Gohoya Cotton Candy.)
A good smell-proof case has become one of those accessories I didn’t think I’d need until I actually started using one. Whether I’m heading on a business trip, spending the day exploring a new city, or simply tossing a couple of carts and a battery into my handbag, it’s nice knowing everything stays organized—and that my bag doesn’t suddenly smell like I’ve been hanging out in a grow room.
It’s not glamorous, but neither is explaining why your handbag smells suspiciously herbal.
Snacks and Treats That Pair Well
Good altnoids are important. Good snacks are essential. These were my tastiest discoveries this month.
Calpis Sherbet
I know, I know. This technically isn’t a snack… it’s dessert. But I’m making the rules.
Calpis has been synonymous with Japanese summers for decades, so when I spotted this Calpis Sherbet Mix, I knew I had to order it. You simply freeze the packet, mix it with milk (or soy milk), and voilà: a light, icy dessert that’s tangy, creamy, and ridiculously refreshing on a hot afternoon.
There’s also a limited-edition Calpis pudding making the rounds this summer, but I actually prefer this. It’s easy to find, fun to make, and somehow tastes even better after a few puffs of your favourite daytime vape.
Nissin Chilled Cup Noodle (Chicken Salt Lemon)
Every summer, Japan finds a new way to convince me that whoever invented convenience stores deserves a medal. This year, it’s cold instant ramen.
Made with chilled water instead of boiling water, Nissin’s new Hiyashi Cup Noodle somehow manages to be refreshing, satisfying, and delightfully weird all at once. My pick is the Chicken Salt Lemon, with its light citrusy broth and surprisingly fresh finish.
It won’t replace a proper bowl of ramen, but on a sweltering afternoon when the thought of eating something hot feels offensive and I’m too baked to do much more? Absolute genius.
Aquarius
This is a July survival tool. Between Japan’s humidity, long days out, and the occasional case of cotton mouth, I’ve been reaching for Aquarius constantly. I prefer it to Pocari Sweat because it tastes lighter and less salty-sweet, which makes it much easier for me to keep sipping when I’m already hot and mildly offended by the weather.

Lazy Summer Afternoons
Every summer, I find myself coming back to Mos Dub by Max Tannone, a brilliant mash-up project that blends classic Jamaican rocksteady and ska with the unmistakable vocals of Mos Def. On paper, it sounds like an odd combination. In reality, it somehow works perfectly.
It’s become the soundtrack to slow summer days: wandering around town, pulling weeds in the garden, tidying the house, or simply escaping the afternoon heat with the air conditioner humming in the background. Relaxed, soulful, and endlessly replayable, it’s one of those albums I rediscover every July and somehow never get tired of.

After Dark in the City
When the sun goes down and the neon lights come on, I swap reggae for something with a little more attitude.
Another Max Tannone favourite, Mic Check 1234, mashes together classic punk with hip-hop in a way that shouldn’t work—but absolutely does. Think Dead Prez × Sex Pistols, Black Star × The Ramones, Eminem × The Clash, and M.O.P. × Operation Ivy for example.
It’s the soundtrack I’d choose for wandering through Osaka, Tokyo, or any big city after dark. Equal parts gritty, nostalgic, and effortlessly cool.
Final Thoughts
If July taught me anything, it’s that Japan’s legal cannabinoid market is showing no signs of slowing down. Just when I thought I’d wrapped my head around one new ingredient, along came another to send me happily down yet another research rabbit hole.
At the same time, this month reminded me that the best products aren’t always the newest ones. Sometimes they’re the vape you instinctively reach for before heading out the door, the album that somehow finds its way back into your summer rotation every year, or the little pen in your bag that isn’t quite what it seems.
